You describe an app in plain English, and it appears.
Then you ask for one more feature, and everything stops working.
That is the part most vibe coding guides skip. I’m not a software developer. I build AI prompt systems, so for this guide I studied how a complete beginner gets from an idea to a working app, and where the process breaks. This post is what I found.
What Vibe Coding Means
Vibe coding is a term popularised by the AI researcher Andrej Karpathy. You describe what you want in normal language, an AI tool writes the code, and you review, redirect and refine.
The book is direct about what it is not: not magic, and not a shortcut around thinking. It is a skill. The person who writes vague prompts gets vague results.
The Workflow in Four Moves
The book teaches one loop, and it applies to every project:
- Prepare. Write the idea clearly, list the user actions, and sketch the screen.
- Plan. Have a planning conversation with the AI before any code exists.
- Build in layers. Structure first, then styling, then features, one stage at a time.
- Test every stage. Fix problems while they are small.
Here is the planning prompt from Chapter 3, word for word:
“Before writing any code, help me plan this project. Recommend the simplest technology to use for a beginner building this as a first project. List the features in the order you recommend building them, based on which features depend on others. Identify the top three technical challenges I should be prepared for. Briefly describe how the data should be structured in storage. Keep everything as simple as possible.”

The Five Parts of a Good Prompt
The book uses five elements: role, context, task, format and constraints. The task is the most important. Compare:
Weak: “Make the header look better.”
Better: “Update the header component so the logo is aligned to the left edge, the navigation links are right-aligned, there is a horizontal dividing line below the header that is one pixel wide in a light gray color, and the header stays fixed at the top of the viewport as the user scrolls. Do not change the background color, the font, or the spacing of the existing elements.”
The second one has a clear pass or fail. You can check it.
The Safety Steps Most Guides Skip
This is what protects you.
- Save snapshots. The book tells you to set up Git before writing any code. Then a bad prompt cannot permanently damage your work.
- Read what the AI writes. AI code can contain subtle errors. Test each feature before the next one.
- Keep secrets out. Never put passwords or API keys in a prompt, or in code you push to a public repository.
- Get a second pair of eyes. If your app collects other people’s data or takes payments, ask someone technical to review it before you launch.
What Is Inside
Vibe Coding Crash Course has 8 chapters, an introduction and a conclusion:
- Chapter 1: setting up your tools (Replit, Cursor, Claude, ChatGPT and others)
- Chapter 2: understanding prompts, with seven prompt types and five patterns
- Chapter 3: your first project, a habit tracker, from idea to deployment
- Chapter 4: building real apps: components, a design system, React, Tailwind, APIs, Git and data storage
- Chapter 5: advanced prompt engineering
- Chapter 6: polishing, deploying, adding sign-in and payments, and pricing
- Chapter 7: the 13 most common beginner mistakes and how to prevent them
- Chapter 8: growing your skills
Tools and screens change often. The book focuses on principles, and so should you: check each tool’s own site for current steps and pricing.
Who It Is For
Complete beginners, people who gave up on traditional coding, entrepreneurs without a technical co-founder, freelancers, creators and teachers who want to build their own tools.
Start Small
Do not build your dream product first. The book’s first project is a habit tracker: a list, some checkboxes and a streak counter. It is small enough to finish and big enough to teach the whole workflow.
I cannot promise how long it will take you, or that anything you build will earn money. But a small finished project teaches more than ten unfinished big ones.
